On one level, they’re simple love songs, but there’s also something a little deeper about growing up and saying goodbye.”

With his third album as Peel Dream Magazine, Joseph Stevens beckons you toward a fabulist, zig-zag world entirely of his own design. On Pad (out Oct. 7 on Slumberland / Tough Love), he eschews the fuzzy glories of his indie pop past – vibraphone trembles while chamber strings take center stage. The curtains lift to reveal banjo. Chimes. Farfisa. And as he lets out a moan atop the album’s title track, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary performance. A conceptual work about losing oneself when all they have is themself, Pad gestures towards an exciting new future for Stevens’ pop moniker by reimagining its own very existence.

Paper Pools- Evil Music Video

“There are two sides to this song. It is very uptempo and seems upbeat on the surface, yet the lyrics are dark. Contrast is a key theme for the EP. I wrote “Evil” from the perspective of someone like me (though not necessarily me) who is in a toxic relationship. There’s a real push-and-pull in a relationship like that: I need to reject this person, but I also really love this person. But the song also applies to anything in life that can be both positive and negative. There are stretches in our lives when we latch onto things that may bring us happiness and joy, yet they’re not good for us long-term. Thinking back to my upbringing with the Jehovah’s Witnesses, I was raised in an extremely specific way of thinking that had both positive and negative moments. But I reached a point when the turmoil became too much, and I needed to take life in a new direction.” -Allen Orr

Sunfruits- Made To Love

Nearly two years on from their last single release, “Mushroom Kingdom,” Australian psychedelic pop outfit Sunfruits have returned with a new garage-rock anthem, “Made To Love.”

Produced by Theo Carbo and mixed / mastered by John Lee at Phaedra Studios (The Murlocs, Bananagun), “Made To Love” showcases an exciting, fresh direction for the group. Written by frontman Winter McQuinn over Melbourne’s harshest lockdown, it’s a fiery 2:30-minute track about running away with your soulmate to escape the hellish landscape of life under capitalism. Filled with distorted guitar riffs, duelling vocals, ethereal strings and crunchy bass and drum combo, this track throws it back to the glam-rock sounds of T-Rex and the 70s revivalism of Ty Segall, showcasing a powerful maturity in the band’s sound and songwriting.
