Artist Biography

STS9, aka Sound Tribe Sector 9, is an instrumental jam fusion band founded in Georgia in the late 90s. The band is a master of breakbeat-infused psychedelic jams with heavy improvisation. Their debut album Interplanetary Escape Vehicle was recorded shortly after the band formed in 1998 with an initial focus on instrumental funk and jazz grooves. STS9 added an additional percussionist in 1999 that filled out their sound to what we know today. The band built a strong cult following early on for their unique jams and became renowned for their festival appearances including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Coachella, New Orleans Jazz Fest, and Outside Lands. They relocated to Northern California in 2000 and formed their own record label, 1320 Records, five years later which released their album Artifact. This album peaked on Billboard’s Electronic Chart at number 12. Over the next decade and a half, STS9 kept pace with extraordinary releases including The Universe Inside which was inspired by Carl Sagan’s “Golden Records” that were sent into space. The opening track “Supercluster” included samples from the original NASA STS-9 transmission. The album debuted in the Top 5 for both the Billboard Dance/Electronic and Heatseekers Charts as well as the Top 40 on the Independent Chart.
