Artist Biography
Sampa the Great, aka Sampa Temob, is a poetic soul-jazz artist who pushes to uplift, empower, and inspire positive change in the world. She was raised in Botswana and fell in love with hip-hop after hearing “Changes” by 2Pac as a child. She started rapping at an early age and moved to Australia as a young adult where she came up in the Sydney rap scene. Her breakout release The Great Mixtape was released by Wondercore Island in 2015. The next year Sampa had her singles “Blue Boss” and “Black Dignity” played on BBC Radio 1 and Australia’s Triple J. Her fanbase continued to grow, pushing her to the spotlight where she shared stages with Kendrick Lamar, Hiatus Kaiyote, and Little Simz. In 2017, she signed to Ninja Tune’s Big Dada imprint and released her second mixtape Birds and the BEE9 which was awarded the Australian Music Prize. Two years later Sampa released her debut album The Return which featured the London jazz collective Steam Down and production by Kwes Darko of Blue Daisy and Clever Austin of Hiatus Kaiyote. The album focuses on the themes of identity and heritage. After more collaborations including with the Avalanches, her second album As Above, So Below was released by Loma Vista in 2022 featuring Denzel Curry, Kojey Radical, Joey Bada$$, and Kidjo.
