Artist Biography

Mountain Grass Unit is the Birmingham, Alabama–bred bluegrass quartet whose technically adventurous blend of tradition‑rooted string mastery and genre‑expanding exploration has rapidly elevated them from regional pickin’ sessions to national festival stages. Comprising mandolinist and vocalist Drury Anderson, guitarist/vocalist Luke Black, fiddler/vocalist Josiah Nelson, and bassist/vocalist Sam Wilson, the band fuses classic bluegrass foundations with elements of country, jazz, funk, rock, and even metal — a hybrid approach evident on their 2024 debut EP Runnin’ From Trouble, recorded at Nashville’s Hartland Studios and produced by Mike Harris of Old Crow Medicine Show, where intricate flatpicking, layered harmonies, and dynamic rhythmic interplay capture both technical precision and live energy. With standout tracks like “Hey Mama,” “Cicada Song,” and “Smugglin’,” the group demonstrates a meticulous command of acoustic instrumentation and compositional nuance that honors tradition while pushing boundaries, earning acclaim on festival circuits from DelFest to WinterWonderGrass and positioning them as one of modern bluegrass’s most compelling young ensembles.
