Checking Out THING Weekend Two with RKS
THING Weekend Two Written By Jordan Barsness
The sun was out once again at Remlinger as weekend two of THING Fest hosted a vibrant lineup of artists, headlined by Rainbow Kitten Surprise. RKS fans were out in full force from the moment the gates opened. One of the great aspects of THING is that fans seem more engaged, with plenty of space to set up camp in the shade while dancing in the sun during sets. You might come to THING knowing only one or two artists, but the easy access to the stage allows you to experience the music intimately and discover something new.
One of the weekend two highlights was Yahritza y Su Esencia, siblings from Yakima, Washington. They are quickly becoming darlings of Musica Mexicana with their romantic style of urban sierreño, a genre close to their family’s roots in the Mexican state of Michoacán.
The crowd hung on every note as Yahritza, with her powerful voice, sang “Soy el Único.”
Emotions ran high during their set as couples embraced, and romantics wandered the grounds in hopes of finding new love. Due to the threat of ICE, Latin Night at THING was canceled, but Yahritza y Su Esencia were able to step in for Soccer Mommy on night two, helping to ease some of the disappointment from the cancellation of an entire day of the festival.
Medium Build sparked an energetic dance party as the day transitioned into an indie rock evening. While finishing the night with Rainbow Kitten Surprise was exciting, my favorite part was seeing their RKS T-shirt-clad fans supporting the bands before them, creating a wonderful vibe.
THING concluded festivities on 8/23 with The Roots, Cory Wong, Tune-Yards, and more! My review is yet to come!
