Artist Biography

Wednesday is the Asheville, North Carolina‑born indie rock force led by songwriter and vocalist Karly Hartzman, whose visceral blend of shoegaze, alternative rock, and alt‑country — often described as particulate “creek rock” — bridges fuzzy guitar distortion with lap steel atmospherics and narrative‑rich lyricism that evokes the American South’s landscapes and lived experience. Formed in 2017 as Hartzman’s solo project and later expanded into a full band with contributors like Xandy Chelmis on pedal steel, Alan Miller on drums, and Ethan Baechtold on bass, Wednesday’s early releases such as I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone and Twin Plagues showcased an evolving mastery of dissonant textures and emotional range; by the time of Rat Saw God and its 2025 follow‑up Bleeds, they had honed an expansive sonic identity that balances jagged guitar work, fuzz‑laden grooves, and evocative storytelling rooted in Southern Gothic resonance. Their work has garnered critical acclaim for the way it marries eclectic influences — from Pavement‑like indie grit to the twang of Americana — into immersive alt‑rock experiences, making them a defining presence in contemporary festival lineups.
