Artist Biography

Smino—born Christopher Smith Jr. in St. Louis, Missouri—is a rapper, singer, and songwriter whose fluid, genre-blurring approach to hip-hop has positioned him as one of the most technically distinctive voices in contemporary rap. Emerging from a musically rich background—his father a keyboardist and his mother a vocalist—Smino developed an early command of melody and rhythm that would later define his hybrid vocal style, seamlessly shifting between rapping, singing, and melodic phrasing. After early work with the Zero Fatigue collective and the release of his breakout mixtape blkjuptr (2015), he gained critical acclaim with his debut album blkswn (2017), followed by NOIR (2018) and Luv 4 Rent (2022), each project expanding his sonic palette through collaborations with producer Monte Booker and a network of forward-thinking artists. His music is technically characterized by elastic vocal cadences, syncopated flows, and intricate beat selection that draws from soul, funk, jazz, and electronic influences, creating compositions that prioritize groove as much as lyrical nuance. On stage, Smino translates this complexity into fluid, rhythm-driven performances that balance improvisational energy with tightly structured arrangements, reinforcing his role as a leading innovator in the evolving landscape of alternative hip-hop.
