Dilly Dallying at Bumbershoot

While many in the Pacific Northwest opt to spend their Labor Day weekend camping or hiking, Seattle residents are trading their usual outdoor gear for two days at Bumbershoot, one of the city’s longest-running festivals.

Admittedly, as a NYC transplant, my first impression of Bumbershoot was that it’s like any other festival. However, beyond the highly anticipated musician lineup, Bumbershoot is actually one of Washington state’s biggest celebrations of art and culture, drawing in thousands of attendees every year.

The fan favorite Gravity Park returns for 2026, bringing skaters and thrill-seekers together for a weekend of ramps, pipes, and rails – absolutely no ridable surface is safe! Also making its comeback is Bumbermania!, where nonstop action steals the show. “Theatrical” and “over-the-top” come to mind when describing this wrestling spectacle. As for something new this year? Novelties include two geodesic domes that allow for small, intimate performances from Puppet Playhouse and local magicians.

Overwhelming demands from 2025 found Comedy Coop a permanent home at Seattle Children’s Theatre, where laughter fills the air every weekend. Their upcoming collaboration with Laughs Comedy Club guarantees an energetic opportunity between regional talents, sore abs from laughing, and a chance to crown the 2026 reigning comic.

I’ve had multiple people (three to be exact) inquire unprompted about the most anticipated act of all: The Cat Circus! Adorable feline cuties from Motley Zoo Animal Rescue will be lounging around a beautifully decorated mini circus, serving (Cat Moss or Kate Moss? You can decide) looks to all attendees. And yes, all are VERY adoptable.

And there’s more! Art exhibitions and installations are scattered across every corner of the campus. Say hello to UNA the Mermaid in her tank on Expo Hall Lawn. ANT Gallery’s partnership with History Link and Cannonball Art explores centuries of Seattle activism. In the mood for some quiet time? Step foot inside SIFF Cinema’s VIDEORAMA: Northwest Shorts for all day screenings from PNW filmmakers.

The programming I’m personally the most excited about? FATHOM’s annual fashion district runway show taking over the Alki courtyard. In a city rarely recognized for our fashion sense, these Seattle-based designers are rewriting the narrative – bringing in bold creativity and detailed craftsmanship to the runway. It’s a grand yet intimate experience; a front row seat to the future of fashion in the Emerald City.

As one of the world’s longest-running independent festivals in the world, Bumbershoot was born to celebrate the PNW’s unique culture. There’s something for everyone at the foot of the iconic Space Needle.

Don’t act like you’ll get that North Cascade camping reservation for Labor Day weekend. Call a friend up. Have a great time dilly dallying at Bumbershoot. There’s something for everyone at the foot of the iconic Space Needle.

You know where to find me September 5-6!
