Q & A

Before the show, we had the chance to sit down with Grabbitz for a quick Q&A session.

*Sam*

So tell us Nick, what got you into music to begin with, and what helped inspire this new album?

*Grabbitz*

I grew up in not a family of musicians, but a family of music lovers. So there was always radio, always extra interest taken in music in general, you know, like there was always “Oh hey, this lyric is cool, or this riff is cool!”, rather than just like the songs being on. You know, my parents pay attention to music, so I would do a lot of listening to the radio. Any chance I got. I’d always call and request my favorite songs. And I think I just couldn’t really track down where it was, because it was before I could even remember. It really was the love for music. I was singing before I could talk, just following pitch, mirroring pitch, and stuff like that. So it’s kind of just baked in.

As for what inspired the new album, You know, I don’t know. I’m 31. I’ve been making music forever, and, you know, I’ve been doing Grabbitz for like 10 years now. That’s just my hardest and it’s the way I get to express myself. And it’s just kind of evolved. It has taken forms of EDM, of pure rock, and even rap type of stuff. And now I think I’m just kind of old enough to be able to combine it all in an interesting way, and really get the music I want out there. And, you know, I feel like I’ve laid the groundwork enough to be able to experiment in that way. And that’s kind of what happened here with the new stuff.

*Sam*

Yeah I’ve been a huge fan of yours over the past 10 years.

*Grabbitz*

Well, thank you, man, thanks for listening. I’m glad you dig it.

*Sam*

So tell me what have been some of your favorite fan interactions that you’ve had thus far?

*Grabbitz*

My favorite fan interactions is when they make art, like any fan that makes a piece of art. I think is the most incredible thing. Like to know that I’ve created a piece of art that has then inspired them to create a piece of art. That ripple effect brings me so much joy. So we collect all the art that we get from fans. Whether it be like a drawing, or sometimes full blown paintings, or sometimes they put butterflies in glass cases and stuff. It’s just super fun, man. That kind of stuff, anything custom you know, when they put like song lyrics on one of the bracelets is amazing.

*Sam*

So with this new tour, what are you looking to do with it? What are you looking to bring to the fans with this tour?

*Grabbitz*

With these string of shows coming up, it’s pretty much just trying to continue paving the sound that I want to do. So it’s all about mixing together EDM bass music with different kinds of things, more rock influences, more live performance, and more singing. And really, there’s nothing different about it in the sense of that. Because, you know, it’s not necessarily the type of tour where it’s like a branded event saying “Check this out. This is the in the dark tour.”, or anything like that. We’re planning on doing that more next year in the fall, where I can actually do a more live show and a more choreographed type of performance based show. But now, when we’re just DJing and performing, singing live and stuff, it’s just trying to get out there as much as possible.

*Sam*

So what is your favorite song from your new EP that you made?

*Grabbitz*

Oh probably Daydream the last song we recorded. My buddy Frank and I wrote it in Buffalo, and I recorded it just so I didn’t forget it, you know. So I just turned the mic on, I plugged the guitar in, and I recorded both of them. I just did a rendition of the song, not even to a click track or anything, and that ended up being the song. We just added strings on top of that, because it ended up being real special. And we just listened to it a bunch, and we’re like, “F*ck man. Like, why would we try?” And we actually did go in and try and rerecord and and do it the right way, put it to a metronome and all that stuff. And it just never was as good as the original one. So we went with that real special one. For me, that’s beautiful. Yeah, it’s always amazing when something just comes together that first time, and could never just be made better. It’s just that’s a perfection thing. It’s magic, and music is magic. And when you can really capture a performance in real time or capture something, it’s just you can’t reproduce it. You can’t replicate it. Just IS.

*Sam*

So what’s something that you would like to tell your fans that are going to be coming up to your tour, or possibly just barely getting into your music?

*Grabbitz*

If you’re just getting into it, I invite you to come check it out. You know, there’s, there’s a lot to dig into with my music. There’s a lot of music out there, and the shows are really, really fun! They’re this really cool combo of just pure fun, bass music, and really heartfelt performance. We just go back and forth. To any fans that want to come check out the shows coming up, I would just say that the sets kust keep getting better and better. I keep learning and evolving the set a little bit, and you know, it’s not going to be the same as when they saw me last time.
