Baaba Maal’s [BA-ba Marl] daring and dazzling new album, Being, will be released on March 31st, 2023.

The hypnotic, looping track emerges from a riff played by Barou Sall, a Hoddu master and long time Baaba Maal collaborator. This traditional Senegalese instrument which prefigures the banjo accompanies Baaba’s pure, searching vocal, backed by Mamadou Sarr’s delicate percussion. Production from Johan Hugo treads a magical line between ancient and modern, following Baaba’s ongoing musical quest to discover where the past meets the future and old becomes new. She supported me when I came out as queer and showed me to navigate difficult times in my life so really the song is a tribute to her strength and guidance. Kicking off with the title track, a chugging bassline, hazy synths, and a hypnotic vocal loop work together for a polished dancefloor cut teased by Max at his shows across the States. Taking things tougher and a little darker, ‘Rock The House’ made in collaboration with FRANCO BA, with its ferocious bass, hyped-up hooks, and restless energy captures the energy of a club in full flow. The follow-up to Max’s huge label debut ‘Resist’, these two rave-ready cuts hint at the exciting things to come for Off The Grid in 2023.
Junior Sanchez- Hit It
Prolific US producer Junior Sanchez returns to Defected with ‘Hit It’, featuring LA-based artist and recent Moodymann collaborator NEZ. With Sanchez’s music heavily influenced by the underground house scene of NYC that brings together marginalized communities, synthesizing Latin rhythms with heavy four-on-the-floor beats, ‘Hit It’ is a perfect demonstration of this sonic aesthetic. At its peak this dancefloor cut becomes busy in the best possible way, bursting with energy thanks to Sanchez’s dense production and NEZ’s dynamic vocals.

Watch the music video for “You I Think Of” on YouTube HERE and stream the track on Spotify HERE.
Malarkey & GotLucky – Supafly
Malarkey & GotLucky linked up after Malarkey was dropping GotLucky’s ‘Can You Feel It’ across the globe on tour. Sending some ideas back and forth it wasn’t long until ‘Supafly’ was born. The track captures real soul and old school vibes while both artists’ signature sounds still shine through.

In the mid-80s, Maraschino might be the spunky Susan, desperately seeking love in a loveless town or the carefree Nikki Finn (from Who’s That Girl?), accused of murdering her boyfriend but somehow finding a rollicking adventure out of it. Actually, Madonna is a good place to start with Maraschino, the brainchild of Piper Durabo, the bloodied but unbowed LA cult figure—think Eve Babitz with a synthesizer—whose music weaves the strange tales of an unfiltered outsider popstar arch-hero in the midst of societal collapse.

Mau P- Gimme That Bounce
Dutch underground export Mau P became a household name across international dance floors last summer with his debut single “Drugs From Amsterdam,” amassing millions of streams and subsequently receiving a techno rework from Reinier Zonneveld. The record was named one of Billboard Dance’s Top 50 Dance Tracks of 2022, charted in the Top 10 in 25 countries, and went on to become Beatport’s 7th highest-selling track of 2022.
Now, the hotly-tipped DJ/producer/singer-songwriter makes his Insomniac Records debut with his long-awaited sophomore single “Gimme That Bounce.” Filled to the brim with vivid sonic details, “Gimme That Bounce” imbues its immersive soundscape with deep, trunk-rattling bass, playful textures, and heatracing tech-house grooves.
Anonymity has long been an intriguing element of electronic music culture, but few artists have pushed the boundaries quite like newly-minted producer Modapit – an enigmatic artist emerging from the shadows of underground dance music. Shrouded in their signature fishnet veil, Modapit’s secrecy allows listeners to look beyond the artist and directly at what the artist wants to present: the juxtaposition between a gothic, edgy streetwear look and euphoric, swirling pop-electronic sounds. By removing the ‘ego’ of the artist, fans fully immerse themselves into Modapit’s disparate, fashion-forward multiverse.
Modapit is giving listeners their first taste of the album with lead single, “Dancing,” a jubilant yet brooding track that translates the emotion of The Weeknd’s latest album, Dawn FM, into a dance-fueled rave experience. Blending pop euphoria with driving deep house grooves and techno synths, “Dancing” delivers Modapit’s characteristic pop-electronic catharsis.

Strawberry Fuzz- Strongs Dr.
This past fall, Strawberry Fuzz presented Wasting My Time, a 3-song teaser produced by guitarist Alex Arias and the band themselves. Building on the reaction to 2021’s collection of raw demos, Fuzztapes Vol.1, the teaser found the band documenting their experience in the dirty underside of LA life, from sniping at the scene kids on the eastside of LA to calling out the elites of the Westside beach cities – as well as critiquing surf conditions. Consequence of Sound wrote about the title track, calling it “the work of a band completely in their element.”
Now, Strawberry Fuzz returns with the follow-up to that teaser, a full-length LP entitled Strongs Dr., out now via CandyShop Recordings. Featuring the three songs on that initial teaser, previously released singles (“No Lighter,” “Talk,” and “Sugar“), and more new tracks, Strongs Dr. is a continuation of the Cali surf-punk exhibited on their past releases, but with even more bite. Last night, the band additionally kicked off the album with sold out show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles.
