Artist Biography
Aly & AJ are the American pop-rock duo formed by sisters Alyson “Aly” Michalka and Amanda Joy “AJ” Michalka whose career spans two decades of evolution from Disney-Channel-fueled teen pop to deeply crafted, genre-fluid independent songcraft. Emerging from Torrance, California, the sisters signed with Hollywood Records in 2004 and released their debut album Into the Rush, which achieved Gold status and introduced an energetic blend of guitar-driven melodies and polished pop hooks; their 2007 album Insomniatic featured the Platinum single “Potential Breakup Song,” a breakthrough on the Billboard charts that cemented their early mainstream impact. After a period of hiatus and a brief rebranding as 78violet, Aly & AJ reclaimed their original name and sound with a series of mature, self-released projects — from the introspective EPs Ten Years and Sanctuary to full-length albums like A Touch of the Beat Gets You Up on Your Feet Gets You Out and Then Into the Sun (2021), With Love From (2023), and Silver Deliverer (2025) — where they fuse synth-pop texture, rock influences, and harmonic precision into expansive compositions. Their technical evolution reflects a disciplined command of songwriting and arrangement, blending layered vocal harmonies, evolving rhythmic structures, and atmospheric production that bridges youthful pop sensibilities with adult emotional depth, making them a compelling presence on festival stages and long-standing contributors to the contemporary pop landscape.
