Portugal. The Man is an Alaskan experimental indie pop sensation. Formed in Wasilla, the band grew from the ashes of Anatomy of a Ghost, a post-hardcore group founded by vocalist and guitarist John Gourley and Zach Carothers, the two founders of Portugal. The Man. The name of the band comes from an attempt to make the band demi-mythic and larger than any of the members themselves. To add to the lineup, keyboardist Wes Hubbard joined the band before the new trio relocated to Portland. Then their drummer Jason Sechrist came into the picture. Portugal. The Man leveraged internet advertising on platforms such as MySpace to propel their debut album Waiter: You Vultures! in 2006. In 2007, Hubbard was replaced by Ryan Neighbors before the band released Church Mouth which had a more aggressive sound. It wasn’t until 2009 that the band charted on the Billboard 200 with The Satanic Satanist followed by the mellow American Ghetto in 2010. Soon after the band signed to Atlantic Records. Guitarist Noah Gersh joined the lineup to help conjure the band’s label debut In the Mountain in the Cloud which dropped in 2012. After some mild successes and tours, the band created Woodstock in 2017 as a self-produced album. This album was a huge commercial and critical success, earning the band a Grammy Award for “Feel It Still.” Now, Portugal. The Man is a staple among indie heads and will be amazing on the Farm!
