Artist Biography

Cimafunk is led by Erik Alejandro Iglesias Rodríguez, a Afro-Caribbean Funk composer, singer, and producer. He was born in 1989 in Pinar del Rio and grew up singing in church. Most of his family is employed in healthcare, and he followed the family tradition in college but always kept music tight to his chest. After two years of studying medicine, Erik decided to pursue a career in music. He moved to Havana at age 21 and spent five years, 2010 to 2015, working as a choir director for various Cuban musicians. In 2014, he joined the infamous vanguard supergroup Interactivo. Two years later he left the group to start Cimafunk. In 2019, the band made its U.S. debut at SXSW and had sold out shows in D.C., Miami, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Mexico, and Europe. Their single “Me Voy” became a global hit and won Cuba’s Lucas Prize. During the pandemic, Cimafunk issued a stack of singles and came out swinging afterwards, working with the likes of Lupe Fiasco, George Clinton, and Ceelo Green.
