Artist Biography
The Neighbourhood is the Newbury Park, California–formed alternative collective whose emergence in the early 2010s signaled a shift toward genre-blurring indie rock, merging atmospheric guitar work with hip-hop, R&B, and pop sensibilities into a cohesive, mood-driven sonic identity. Formed in 2011 by vocalist Jesse Rutherford alongside guitarists Zach Abels and Jeremy Freedman, bassist Mikey Margott, and drummer Bryan Sammis, the band first gained traction through the viral success of “Sweater Weather,” a breakout single that anchored their debut album I Love You. (2013) and topped Billboard’s Alternative chart while introducing their now-signature monochromatic aesthetic and melancholic tone. Subsequent releases expanded their sonic architecture—integrating electronic textures, trap-influenced percussion, and layered vocal production—while maintaining a core emphasis on mood, minimalism, and rhythmic restraint. Technically defined by a fusion of indie rock instrumentation with R&B-inspired phrasing and hip-hop-adjacent production, the band constructs compositions that prioritize atmosphere as much as melody, translating their studio precision into immersive live performances that blur the line between alternative rock tradition and modern pop experimentation.
