Artist Biography
Alabama Shakes is the Grammy-winning American rock band from Athens, Alabama, whose fierce synthesis of blues-rock, Southern soul, and roots-infused garage rock has made them a vital force in 21st-century rock music. Formed in 2009 by lead singer and guitarist Brittany Howard alongside Heath Fogg (guitar) and Zac Cockrell (bass) after years of honing their craft in bars and clubs across the Southeast, the band built its reputation on raw emotional intensity and meticulous musicianship straight out of the studio to the stage. Their 2012 debut Boys & Girls garnered critical praise and Grammy nominations with gritty, soulful anthems like “Hold On,” while the expansive, genre-defying Sound & Color (2015) debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and won multiple Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Song for “Don’t Wanna Fight.” After a long hiatus beginning in 2018 and solo explorations by Howard, the trio reunited in the mid-2020s with new music and touring plans, bringing back their thunderous blend of blazing guitar, rhythmically layered grooves, and Howard’s powerhouse vocals — a technical and emotional alchemy that fuses Southern musical heritage with contemporary sonic exploration.
