Hot Buttered Rum- No Reason Why
Like a long, dark piece of music, the pandemic started small, then got big, and loud, and painfully dissonant. Hot Buttered Rum did their best to cope with its indignities, as most did, and much of that coping was done through the business of making lots and lots of noise. The songs that emerged from all this noise-making are a little louder than any the band has released to date in what became the latest album, Shine All Night. Hot Buttered Rum hopes to help provide some cheer in the times ahead, whether those times are brighter, darker or, as so often, somewhere in between.

Mad Anthony- Rina
Cincinnati, OH-based rock band Mad Anthony — the musical project of John K. Schwab, Larry Doston, and Carl “Mad Anthony” Richards — made a name for themselves in their local scene in the 70s, and in 1975, the group sat down and recorded a handful of tracks which proceeded to sit untouched for over forty years. Eventually, the recording did reach the ears of an important listener: Schwab’s son, Benjamin Schwab, now a musician himself with the bands Drugdealer and Sylvie, the latter of which takes direct influence from his father’s band. And after seven or so years of Ben’s convincing, the elder Schwab and his bandmates decided it was time to return to the project, thus, introducing the release of those previously unearthed ‘75 demos as The Lost Tapes (due Spring 2023, via Earth Libraries).

Marvel Years- Voyage Ahead Pt. I
When the early days of the pandemic deprived Marvel Years of his refuge of live performance, the creative polymath decided to use lockdown to reinvigorate his love for studio songwriting and refine the Marvel Years sound. The result of this reflection was the concept for Voyage Ahead, a sprawling, thematic listening journey that takes fans into Marvel Years‘ exciting new sonic ventures.
That journey now begins with Voyage Ahead Pt.1, the first part of a two-part EP series and a collection of songs that emulates the jubilation of live performance in electronic music. On Voyage Ahead Pt. 1, Marvel Years goes beyond just live guitar recordings by playing each instrumental element himself in places where he would have used samples. This process results in a studio EP that recreates the Marvel Years live sound from a time when he couldn’t actually perform, thus bringing out the artist’s most innovative work yet and showcasing the immense possibilities of what Marvel Years can be.

Noah Cyrus- Every Beginning Ends
Noah Cyrus continues to tease her forthcoming debut album, The Hardest Part, with a duet alongside Death Cab For Cutie’s Benjamin Gibbard titled ‘Every Beginning Ends,’ a spectacularly subtle and heart wrenching country ballad detailing the demise of a tired romance. Recorded in Seattle at Benjamin’s studio, their call-and-response details of a dwindling love further cements Cyrus as one of the best songwriters of her generation. Described as “one of the most pulverizing moments on the album” by Rolling Stone Magazine, Noah explains on this collaboration: “That was such a surreal experience. I’ve always been such a huge fan, so it was pretty daunting to get in the room with him, but once we got to work it all came very naturally.” She continues, “we talked about past relationships, failed relationships, our parents’ relationships, and relationships that have lasted forever. He told me his dad has a saying: ‘you have to wake up and choose to love someone every day,’ and it sparked this conversational song about the twilight of a relationship and the reluctance to admit that something has run its course. I relate to that in many ways, not only with me, but also just with my parents’ relationship. Writing about that gave me more understanding.”

One South Lark- Pop Star
Our upcoming EP “‘Till September” captures the fleeting nostalgia of a summer gone too soon. Our inspiration on this project ranged from the new wave music of The Cure to the pop-poetry of Taylor Swift, creating a unique retro-yet-modern sound. We wrote it while in our junior year of college, but all at separate universities. Songwriting sessions full of lyrical brainstorming were held over Zoom and voice memos containing jangly guitar riffs and Beach Boys-inspired harmonies were iMessaged back and forth. In our few breaks from school, we hustled to Bogalusa, Louisiana, and recorded the five tracks at Studio In The Country. We spent hours in the secluded swamp studio with our sound engineer Ben Mumphrey perfecting the indie pop sound we were going for. With only three members, we created and produced every sound heard on the record, often playing more than one instrument each. The result is a project we’re proud to say is our best work yet, from the atmospheric power of the overdriven guitar in “Malibu” to the danceable Motown beat of “Wasting My Time.”

Paper Pools- Portraits
“This song was inspired by a psychedelic experience I had during the COVID lockdown. The title, “Portraits,” alludes to a friend of mine. She’s a wonderful painter, and we did mushrooms together. It was one of the more visionary experiences I’ve had. It wasn’t like anything I encountered during my childhood. So much organized religion, and especially Jehovah’s Witnesses, is formal and structured. What my friend and I experienced was more like a journey. There was a moment when I thought the two of us were twins in a womb. It felt like we had traveled from birth to death. Then there were other times when I was basically looking down upon myself. It was intense. I know I didn’t actually experience these things, yet they felt very real and turned out to be deeply meaningful.” -Allen Orr
