December 11th Weekly Roundup Feature

Hey! It’s December 11th and we are back with our weekly roundup feature! Check back in with us next week for the latest music news!

ALPHA 9- Final Frontier

Artem Stolyarov. Whether he’s ARTY or ALPHA 9, he’s always been sensational.

Artem first arrived on Anjuna’s radar in 2010. What followed was a stellar run under his ARTY alias: ‘Rush’, ‘Zara’, ‘Around The World’, ‘Rebound’, and ‘Kate’ are Anjunabeats classics, and helped define the sound of the label in the early 2010s. Artem’s ALPHA 9 alias is where he has found his stride in recent years. Focusing on the progressive trance that he fell in love with as a teenager, some of Artem’s standout moments as ALPHA 9 include ‘Before The Dawn’, ‘Stellar’, ‘Skin’, and his faithful update of Above & Beyond, and Zoë Johnston’s evergreen classic ‘Good For Me’.

Featuring fourteen tracks from across the ALPHA 9 universe, ‘New Horizons’ takes the ALPHA 9 project to soaring new heights. “This is a new chapter,” Artem says. “I’m very confident in the direction I’m taking this project. This new album is a journey through the beginning of ALPHA 9’s artistry to now.” Final Frontier is out now.

B4DFRi3ND & RYL0- F4r from Perf4ct

Chicago-bred, Los-Angeles-based alternative pop project B4DFRi3ND is an experiment in amorphous identity. Spearheaded by the artist formerly known as Melo Makes Music (who has collaborated with names such as Ravyn LenaeKweku Collins, and Taylor Bennett), B4DFRi3ND is both a solo act and an interdisciplinary collective.

Now, B4DFRi3ND returns with their new single, “F4r from Perf4ct,” a collaboration with rising alt-pop singer/songwriter RYL0, who has dominated 2022 with inclusions on Spotify’s New Music FridayFresh Finds, and Hyperpop playlists, and songs with artists such as FraxiomSabby Sousa, and DJ Re:Code. This is the second song between the two innovators, following B4DFRi3ND‘s remix of RYL0‘s “I’m In Love (With You)“.

Beat Awfuls- Interstate Skeletons

Beat Awfuls announces a new LP, PAWS, due Feb. 10, 2023. The first single on PAWS is “Interstate Skeletons,” a saturated mid-tempo track that delivers hard-won insights into abuse, all while testing and teasing its own pop sensibility. Playful synths and Casio drum fills contrast the cutting angles of the guitar riffs, giving the track a heightened energy. With lyrics like, “why do people even promise to be vulnerable and honest,” we hear Vicini process his trauma while he searches for something shiny through the dark.

Behind You- Aries

Eora / Sydney-based punk trio, Behind You, share a noisy new track, ‘Aries’. Behind You have an existing distinct style: guttural vocals, heavily distorted guitars, fuzzy delayed vocals, and unanticipated, cleverly timed drops that dissolve into a hypnotic, pounding bass. ‘Aries’ pushes forward beyond this, leaning further into an industrial tone, adding a mix of percussion that is bare and free of reverb, with moments of stripped-back relentless drones and monotonous vocals in the coda.

Bridal Party- Pool

Art-pop quintet Bridal Party share the music video for “Pool”, the second single from their forthcoming LP Cool Down (out on February 15th). This track outlines the joy and challenge of coming out of your shell after periods of isolation. The lyrics of “Pool” were penned by guitarist Joseph Leroux in a demo in early 2019, their mantra-like simplicity inspired by the Porches album of the same name. “I wanted the lyrics to feel potent and understated. They were written with building myself up in mind, in a time when I was looking for a lot of validation from other people. I wanted to remind myself with a song, of the value of choosing yourself and choosing periods of quiet, before coming back into your communities.”

Megadose- Pig

“When recording ‘Pig,’ our main goal was to make the whole thing feel like it was constantly one too-tight corner away from going off the rails.

I wrote the bass part first, and did my best to channel my inner Tina Weymouth. Laura delivers this perfectly, leaning into an athletic, busy playing style, but with room in the mix to breathe, and still ultimately driving the song as the whole thing crashes forward. To add a feeling of urgency and alarm, Mikey added a guitar track that’s intentionally played to sound like a siren, riding a fine line between melody and dissonance. Rounding it off with a dose of camp was producer Mike Davis’s decision to mix an actual air raid siren into the intro, which, amazingly, just kind of works. The video leans into this Emergency! Warning! vibe, with roving colored searchlights bouncing off us while we wiggle around and try not to break character.

The song’s about an actual person in my life, but I kept the lyrics intentionally ambiguous to hopefully make the listener think (it is about cops? a cheating husband??). The general message is meant to be pretty clear: men, even the seemingly upstanding ones, have a sickening capacity to be, well, pigs. I think the resulting feeling is a little like having your best friend throw their passenger door open and say “STRAP IN,” before peeling out to go egg your high school bully’s car, then maybe do some donuts in the parking lot.” -Stephen Steen / Megadose

Davis has wanted to connect the two since he started producing, so this album is his first full-length foray into cinematic electronic music.

The Greeting Committee- Anything But You

Starting with a simple guitar before a rush of vocals comes flooding in, The Greeting Committee today releases their next single “Anything But You.” Produced by Jake Luppen of Hippo Campus and accompanied by a supercut of tour footage as the official video, the track is heavy hearted yet still carefree. It’s not hard to imagine how “Anything But You” will translate into a perfect echoing singalong for a live show.

Walker & Royce- Feel The Vibe

Producer and DJ duo Walker & Royce release their latest original ‘Feel The Vibe’, out now via Dirtybird.

‘Feel The Vibe’ marks Walker & Royce’s anticipated return to Dirtybird following last year’s collaborative Enthusiasm EP with Claude VonStroke. Dangerously dark and thrillingly off-kilter, ‘Feel The Vibe’ is a frisky 5-minute house cut overflowing with glitchy melodies and slinky basslines. Attention-grabbing from start to finish, Walker & Royce have topped off their dancefloor-ready discography with another energetic heater. A flock favorite previewed throughout Claude VonStroke’s ‘Your Dad Plays Great Music Tour’, ‘Feel The Vibe’ arrives ahead of Walker & Royce’s appearance at Holy Ship! Wrecked and headline ‘Just What The World Needs Tour’, set to kick off in January 2023.
