Beats Awfuls- PAWS

Beat Awfuls is the artistic vision of Boston expat and musical factotum Dave Vicini.

Drawing from drugs, pop culture, and his personal experience all with a punk rock ethos, Dave dismantles his inspirations until the result is uniquely Beat Awfuls. Like his heroes in The Breeders, The Velvet Underground, and Violent Femmes, his songs range from driving, enigmatic rockers to dark, vulnerable laments. These songs are meant to linger, seductive like a pop hook, all while Vicini explores themes of disaffection, drug dependency and the realities of late-stage capitalism.

The band showcases their irreverence for genre, combining Japanese shamisen samples and jazzy pianos, with a driving yet evolving rhythm section reminiscent of the avant-pop of Stereolab or Broadcast. This new oddity, “Pripyalab,” ripples with pulsing synths and a haunting arrangement. Photo Ops- You Must Not Need A Friend At All

Photo Ops, the project of current LA resident Terry Price, announces his new album, Burns Bright, out on Paul Is Dead Records on Aug. 28. You can pre-order it HERE. He has also shared the first single / video, “You Must Not Need A Friend At All.” Price offers some background on the song:

“On the whole record, I was very interested in space, and the contrast being acoustic, natural sounds and instruments, and the analog synth.  There is something very striking about how natural it can still seem – processing the loss of a relationship, from indoors, looking outside, allowing myself to feel the loss and the passing of anger into an honest grief and complaint of what is left.” -Terry Price / Photo Ops

Phyphr- Reaction

Guitarist/producer Phyphr is one of Denver’s most hotly-tipped talents, making waves with his electro-soul stylings and funky, electronic songwriting. Dedicated to inspiring his listeners, the artist has a DIY, self-produced ethos that’s intrinsic to his artistic expression and messaging: for Phyphr, everyone should be empowered to find their passion and make positive change for themselves and the world.

Now, Phyphr releases “Reaction,” a hip-hop-infused electronic cut that stays true to the LP’s central message. In touch with the song’s repeated refrain –“every action causes a reaction” – the song elicits a perpetual call-and-response, both sonically and thematically. The track complements its lyrics with production elements that subside just to give way to new ones, asking the listener to think for themselves: “Will you cause a reaction?”

RIOT- Meditate

RIOT returns to Gud Vibrations with their latest single “Meditate.”

RIOT is an Israeli-born, LA-based duo with a reputation for concocting high energy bass tracks that run the gamut from thrashing dubstep, hard-hitting left-field bass and a few soft-edged melodic tracks sprinkled in-between. They have become repeat offenders on NGHMTRE and SLANDER‘s Gud Vibrations label with a history that stretches back almost three years across five singles. They are circling back to the imprint with their next offering, “Meditation,” a genre-blurring creation that flits between relaxing vocal narration, bouncy halftime rhythms, roaring jump-up drum & bass, neck-breaking dubstep, while seamlessly switching between each style with effortless ease.
