Artist Biography

The Mars Volta is a progressive rock band formed in 2001 after Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala split from At the Drive-In to form the group called De Facto. The band changed their name to the Mars Volta and embraced the exploration of sounds outside their former band. The band’s debut EP Tremulant arrived in 2002 with heavy touring following after. The Mars Volta built a reputation for mythic lives, with word-of-mouth advertising building them a cult following. Soon after the band signed with Universal and toured Europe supporting the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their bass player passed away from a heroin overdose while on tour. For the Mars Volta’s 2003 second album Deloused in the Comatorium, Flea from the RHCP was featured on nine of the songs and John Frusciante also contributed to a track. The album sold more than 500,000 copies and received a gold certification. In 2005, the band released their second album Frances the Mute. The album was a concept album around a diary found in a repossessed car by a band member who worked as a rep-man. The author of the diary was a now gown adopted adult who was looking for his birth parents. The album is loosely based on characters and life events from the diary. The album sold more than 500,00 copies and entered the Top 20 at number four. For the next two decades, the Mars Volta kept making chart-topping releases with their latest being 2023’s Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazon.
