Artist Biography

Cory Wong is a jazz-funk-fusion guitarist that was born in New York but raised in Minnesota. He attended the McNally Smith College of Music in Saint Paul and soon found himself embarking on his journey to become the legend he is today. Cory started hitting the local jazz clubs and found work as a producer, arranger, and sitting in on tours. He co-founded the indie label Secret Stash Records. His quarter, the Cory Wong Quartet, put out the soul-jazz LP Even, Uneven in 2008 and had their single “Upstream” make it into Rock Band 2 back in 2010. Two years later he released the double album Quartet/Quintet which was recorded with a stack of talent. During this time period, Cory met Vulfpeck’s Jack Stratton, Theo Katzman, Joe Dart, and Woody Goss at a house show in Minneapolis that sparked a friendship which landed Cory in the studio to help record Vulfpeck’s 2016 album The Beautiful Game. The album reached number ten on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart. In 2017, Cory made his full-length solo debut with Cory Wong and the Green Screen Band. The album was a mash of funk, R&B, jazz, and rock and featured vocals from Vulfpeck’s Antwaun Stanley. Soon after the album was released, Cory’s guitar skills could be heard on Vulfpeck’s next album release, Mr. Finish Line. To continue with his solo work for his next album, Cory gathered bassist Sonny Thompson, drummer Michael Bland, and the horn section Hornheads, all former bandmembers for Prince, as well as other talent to record 2018’s The Optimist. From here, Cory kept the momentum, playing a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden in 2019, getting a Grammy nomination for Best New Age Album for his work with Jon Batiste, and making it to number five on the Contemporary Jazz Albums Chart with his collaboration album Golden Hour featuring saxophonist Dave Koz.

Now to cover the Superjam. Cory went all out with his roster for what will be a legendary show. The Fearless Flyers are a spin-off group from Vulfpeck, so I suspect the backing band will be mostly Vulfpeck members with a smattering of other legends that Cory has in his back pocket. The stack of vocalists he is bringing out is mind blowing. Remi Wolf, Big Wild, Jake Luppen, Sammy Rae, Danielle Ponder, Robbie Wulfsohn, Sierra Hull, and Devon Gilfillian are all top tier talent that will make this a once in a lifetime experience. All taking place in a tent. A. TENT.
