Artist Biography

AFI, which stands for “A Fire Inside,” is a Northern California punk band that formed as a high school band in 1991. The band broke up when the members all went to different colleges but came back together during a holiday break to play a one-off reunion show. The audience response from this show got the band members to quit school to pursue music full-time. AFI then issued several singles and their debut album Answer That & Stay Fashionable before signing with Nitro who released the band’s second album Very Proud of Ya in 1996. After some lineup changes, the band released the EP A Fire Inside in 1998 followed by the 1999 album Black Sales in the Sunset. The following year AFI released The Art of Drowning which brought them commercial success with the single “Days of the Phoenix” and charted in the Billboard 200. The band then signed with DreamWorks after the turn of the century who released their major label debut Sing the Sorrow in 2003. The album went platinum and had the singles “Girls Not Grey” and “The Leaving Song, Pt. II” get airtime on MTV. AFI continued to release hits over the next 20 years with the 2021 album Bodies being their latest release and 11th album.
