Artist Biography

Pixies is one of alternative rock’s most influential bands. Forming in 1986 at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the band name came from a member randomly flipping through a dictionary. The group got noticed by Fort Apache Studios while playing a supporting show for Throwing Muses and was offered their first recording opportunity. In 1987, Pixies recorded 18 songs over three days in what would be dubbed The Purple Tape. This first recording was given to key players in the alternative scene, including Ivo Watts, the head of England’s 4AD Records, who signed the band on the advice of his girlfriend. 4AD released eight of the demo songs as Come on Pilgrim in 1987 which peaked at number five on the U.K. Indie Album Chart. The same year, Pixies started recording their debut album Surfer Rosa which ended up being released in 1988 and reached number two on the U.K. Indie Chart. This success got the band signed to Elektra. Pixies kept seeing successful releases but found more fame in Britain and Europe than in America. Over the years the band has taken periodic hiatuses while members pursued side and solo projects. They opened for U2 in the early 1990s for the Zoo TV Tour but took a long break afterward that lasted until 2004 when Pixies did a tour with a stops across the U.S. including Coachella and Europe. The band kept touring for nearly a decade until they released new music in 2013. After some lineup changes, the album Indie Cindy came in 2014 and reached number 23 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. Their next album Head Carrier arrived in 2016 and had the single “Classic Masher” which debuted at number 30 on the Adult Alternative Songs Chart, the band’s first appearance on a Billboard airplay chart since 1992. Pixies’ most recent release is 2022’s Doggerel which takes influences from folk and country.
