Who are Rae and the Ragdolls?

It was 2021, and the pandemic had taken so much from us all. Spaces that had been filled with live music and connection had grown silent. Shows began ramping up that fall, bringing back the magic we all longed for. I was asked to do an album release review for a friend’s band, Bad Guru, at Smith’s Olde Bar, a local venue in Atlanta where bands cut their teeth. The opening band was Stardust Sonata who happened to be playing their second show as a band that night. They’ve become one of my favorite local bands and will get their Bonnaroo spotlight in due time. Then came Rae and the Ragdolls. Their frontwoman, Natasha Rae Wermers, made a hand puppet that peeked from behind the curtain before they started playing. It was a brief but memorable moment that had a lasting impact on me. The band blew me away. I followed them around town, seeing them play anytime I could. Once I found them at a coffee shop where they played a three-hour set. I met another fan who had seen them play the previous weekend and had driven hours to come to see the band perform practically on a sidewalk. He saw the same talent I did. We knew even then that this band would be going places, and I wanted to be part of making that happen. When I hosted my Bootleg Gizzfest, of course, I had Rae and the Ragdolls perform along with John Ferrara doing his then-solo show Mono Means One. And now I have brought both acts to Bonnaroo for your listening pleasure.

Rae and the Ragdolls capture the modern-classic sound of rock and roll that blends the traditional, tried-and-true big guitar sound with a more contemporary twist of indie rock. The band pulls from the decades of artists that came before them, including the Allman Brothers and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, while setting their own tone of playful songwriting and instrumental bliss. Every show they perform, whether it be a small house party or a massive stage, has the same magic about it. Rae and the Ragdolls playing Bonnaroo makes sense as their music belongs on the Farm.
