Work Wife + Mary Hood- Drown Me Out

The first in Brooklyn-by-way-of-Seattle indie pop artist Work Wife’s series of collaboratively-written tracks with other female artists in the Brooklyn indie scene, “Drown Me Out” was co-written with upstate New York native Mary Hood. The track describes their shared experience of being told how to live your life by someone who hasn’t walked in your shoes. A true collab, Meredith Lampe (of Work Wife) brought the half-finished song containing only the verse groove to Mary, who wrote the super catchy chorus. After getting in a room together to flesh out the lyrics, they came up with the outro together on the spot. Work Wife’s collab series was meant to foster community and collaboration, and this track serves as a true kickoff to the series as the two songwriters created a friendship along with the song.

“‘All I Have To Show’ is about starting over in the wake of generational trauma.  The song combines stories from several real acquaintances of mine.  For some people the only answer in the face of abuse is to leave town and start again.  This song presents that story in a hopeful light.  Two people in love heading out on the road to escape.  At the end of the day, having each other is enough.” -Philip Basnight

OSEES- Perm Act

OSEES have shared “Perm Act,” the second single off  their forthcoming album, A Foul Form, due August 12 via Castle Face Records. The new track comes alongside a music video featuring animation by John Harlow.

Speaking on their new video, John Dwyer wrote:

“Who likes a cop?

Other cops.

After years of having unpleasant to violent encounters with police, I had the thought  that wouldn’t it be fun if they loved each other so much they ate each other…a sort of dark comedy contemporary  and executive branch based ‘a modest proposal.’

Problem solved?

The violence would hit such a high pitch that they just frenzied like sharks with chum.

I saw with my own eyes two of the biggest knuckleheads i grew up with go on to have careers in law enforcement  emulating the beatings they regularly took when they would mouth off to a cop.

These guys were most definitely not fit for gun ownership, let alone policing others.

Good luck out there.”

Smokey Brights- Ocean Shores

Perseverance through troubled times has a subtle shine and Seattle’s Smokey Brights have been shining through these times with songs of hope, determination, compassion, defiance and love. A new record was ready to be released and a year of tours booked to support it, but the dark cloud of 2020 came down and, well, no one said perseverance was easy. Smokey Brights shined on, releasing the album I Love You But Damn in July of 2020. The record garnered rave reviews and the support of independent radio, eventually landing on KEXP’s top albums of the year. Hunjiya- TALK2ME! and FAVORITE

“My new album is brimming with themes: Code switching- how you change yourself slightly depending on who you’re with and what is happening. The concept of a chameleon- how the animal changes colors based on what environment they’re in. In this case, I am the chameleon, and my behaviors, feelings, actions, etc. are all changing based on the situation. People give the advice of “being yourself” but they don’t talk about how there’s not just one version of yourself. There’s multiple that add up to who you are. As for the title itself, chameleon comes from the Greek word “khamai” meaning “on the ground, earth” and “leon” meaning “lion” (Hunjiya herself is a leo).”

Speaking on his new single, Art wrote:

“‘Run Away’ is a road trip song. I was trying to capture that feeling of autonomy and freedom one feels when they buy their first car and a whole new world opens up. Pile in, fill it up and skip town. It is a rite of passage for many, and a defining moment in my life came when I could finally break free and crank up that stereo.”

Zoon- Big Pharma EP

The release of Big Pharma follows Zoon’s critically acclaimed debut album, Bleached Wavves (which was shortlisted for the Polaris Prize in 2021). Recently, Zoon shared an Apple Music Home Session, featuring stripped-down versions of songs off Bleached Wavves and a cover of My Morning Jackets‘ “Sooner.” The new session’s description reads: “Recording with Michael Peter Olsen (who’s laid down strings for the likes of Drake, Arcade Fire, and k-os), Zoon remakes a pair of Bleached Wavves cuts—“Vibrant Colours” and “Light Prism”—as acoustic dream-pop hymns redolent of a coffeehouse Galaxie 500. But he still infuses them with just enough textural detail (shimmering strings and nature sounds on the former, noctural twang on the latter) to retain their essential otherworldly vibe.”

Noah shares: “I call this song “July’s sister song” due to their similarity in lyrics, but in actuality they’re really more like cousins. They’re about different people, entirely different storylines, and each brings up different memories and emotions. In a way, I see a lot of growth in myself from who I was then and who I am now, but at the same time it’s still impossible for me to walk away from people I love, even when it’s harmful to myself.” Earlier today, Noah joined Zane Lowe on his Apple Music show, New Music Daily to discuss the track.
