Hey hey, everyone! It’s September 11th and I don’t want to say my usual “Happy” because of the significance of the date in American history, but I will say that there are some great tracks on this week’s lineup! Check out our featured track most of all- it’s a banger! Keep it tuned to The Festival Voice!
PurpleSkye- Mint (Phillosopher Remix)
Comments come from Phillosopher!
- What made this production fun to work on?
- Vocal recording was exciting for this track because I have never created a vocal emphasised song (with my own voice). This project had been a new adventure for me, and scary at times.
- What do the lyrics mean?
- These lyrics are all about experiencing new life, trial, success, and failure. Mint in fresh, fresh is new, and new can be either scary, beautiful, or a little bit of both. The phrase young love is not necessarily about a person, but just a love for something new.
- What inspired this production?
- Honestly, I was just having fun playing with serum, designing some sounds, and then I started playing some chords (the lead) and the energy just felt so right.
- What is your favorite part of the production?
- My favorite part of the production is the counterpoint relationship between the Bass and Leads. There are some fun and intricate call and response moments that help keep the energy high.
- Was there a challenge with this track and if so, how did you approach it?
- Yes one main challenge in this track was finding and then performing the right vocal tones and energy. The approach was simple, keep trying different takes until I nailed the right compotation of energy and feel. Usually this is about 30 – 45 takes per phrase. In the end, this was about 500 takes total to choose from! Not uncommon by any means.

The sound at the center of A Sparkle Road Cult is Bret’s voice. It’s an idiosyncratic writer and composer’s voice that has shades of the outsider sounds of Robert Wyatt, Syd Barrett, and Arthur Russell. The accompanying arrangements bring to mind the songcraft of the Carpenters and Prefab Sprout-esque Sophisti-Pop shaken up/down by a touch of the large format boogie of Wings and raw Power Pop of Big Star.

A stark contrast to this year’s previous dubstep-leaning releases, “Your Light” flutters with airy guitar melodies, hazy vocal accents, and bright, bubbly synths before diving into a heady saxophone solo. “Your Light” marks the first release off the latest edition of GRiZ’s iconic Chasing The Golden Hour album series.

Jordi Up Late- GOAX
LA-based electropop artist & producer Jordi Up Late is back with a brand new single entitled “HOAX.”
Speaking on her latest track, she wrote:
“I’ve never thought of myself as a particularly sweet or bubbly person. I get moody and I get annoyed and I need space. So when I found myself in a relationship with a happy go lucky type, the personality imbalance created a creeping disillusionment. The tension festered over time into my feeling he was either fake or emotionally one dimensional. Either way the relationship became a ‘hoax’ and disintegration was inevitable.”

Pony Girl- Running In Circles
Ottawa-Hull-based indie-rock band Pony Girl share “Running in Circles,” the latest single off their forthcoming LP, Enny One Wil Love You, due October 14 via Paper Bag Records. Precious Pepala- My Eyes Only
Precious Pepala today shares the official video for her debut single ‘My Eyes Only’, a bold arrival and opening statement from a rising new voice in UK pop. At just seventeen, Precious’ lyrics manage to contain universal sentiments that speak to her generation – ‘My Eyes Only,’ which NYLON Magazine praised as “a stunning introduction to a promising talent,” hailing Precious for having “a voice beyond her years and ear for captivating melodies”; is a soaring vocal showcase about vulnerability in private, and the video, directed by Alexandra Crichton-Brannan, reflects this sentiment, with Precious crying in her bedroom, wanting to hide her emotions from those closest to her.
Canada’s Preoccupations have released their fourth studio LP, Arrangements. The album begins with the pounding metallic slash of guitar strings of “Fix Bayonets!”. It’s harsh and desolate at first, but builds into a thrilling synth sprint. The track —from its call-to-arms title and tense first guitar phrases to its whirlwind evolution— sets the stage for what is to come: a Preoccupations record that weaves their guitar-heavy origins with their newer synth-based work. The result is Arrangements, a record that is at once the band’s most intense, engaging, and playful work yet.
Sam Fermin- Your Ghost
San Fermin shares “Your Ghost,” the final single and focus track off their brand new EP, Your Ghost, out today via songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone and vocalist Allen Tate‘s label, Better Company. The label, which Ludwig-Leone and Tate formed in 2020, has since seen releases from Wye Oak, Wild Pink, Sorcha Richardson, Pure Bathing Culture, Daisy the Great, and more.
Following the release of the band’s debut album, 2019’s Beauty & Balance, COVID-19 put the brakes on the Brooklyn-based band’s burgeoning career. Not content with sitting still, the band decided to travel down to Georgia to record their sophomore, self-titled LP (S.C.A.B.), which they engineered and produced themselves. (side note: Brandon, the letter “B” in S.C.A.B., does play on this record, but has since left the group to focus on solo work under the name Hayfitz.) Having distance from their beloved city during this unprecedented, tragic time helped them hone a sound that is even more distinctly New York.

Seth Hills – The Middle
Experimenting with a new sound, Seth Hills is bringing ‘The Middle’ today. The creation process started when Hills felt inspired to create a male vocal based track. After he made an instrumental, he sent it straight to Magnus, whose vocals can be heard on the track. ‘The Middle’ is a good hybrid between Hills’ old signature sounds blended into a new chapter of his music. Premiering the track officially during his Tomorrowland mainstage set, the uplifting sound had the crowd on their feet.

Spag Heddy- Smile Feat. Lalo
Dominating the bass circuit with his colossal drops and melodic undertones, Dutch producer Spag Heddy returned to Monstercat today, delivering the old-school-influenced single, “Smile (feat. Lalo).” Drawing inspiration from his early productions, Spag blends nostalgic wobbles and heavy growls with Lalo’s polished vocals, giving the record an uplifting feel. In comparison to his decimating stylings like his last label release, “Carbonara” with Pixel Terror, Spag goes back to basics with catchy lyrics that shine in his masterful production, serving up a different kind of anthem.

The Garden- Horseshit on Route 66
Southern California band The Garden have released their new album, Horseshit on Route 66. The 11-tracks that make up their latest are some of twin brothers Wyatt & Fletcher Shears most fiery endeavors to date. Recorded in Downtown Los Angeles, the record pulls from the legacies of Southern California hardcore and UK punk, but continues to experiment with dissonant electronics and the drum & bass sound the duo is known for. Though plans to record in a ghost town and set up camp “somewhere haunted” were abandoned, that spirit is embodied in the record. “A good chunk of the songs were inspired by the “scary stories” we read as kids and our interest in the supernatural,” says Wyatt. The duo also cite children’s book illustrator Stephen Gammell as a major reference point, his drawings infused with the same underlying menace that their music evokes.
The Messenger Birds- Tragic Comedy
Detroit-based experimental/noise rock band The Messenger Birds are excited to announce the Friday, November 18 release of Tragic Comedy, the duo’s forthcoming sophomore album (pre-order and pre-save HERE). Tragic Comedy picks up right where the band’s debut LP, Everything Has To Fall Apart Eventually, left off — a world in isolation, outlandish conspiracy theories on an infinite feedback loop, overwhelming amounts of death and grief and uncertainty, and storylines that sound so hyperbolic and satirical that the only logical conclusion would be that we are all just living in a simulation and none of this is real.
The Paranoyds- Talk Talk Talk
Los Angeles-based DIY rock band The Paranoyds share their highly anticipated sophomore LP Talk Talk Talk out everywhere now via Third Man Records. Alongside the release of the album, the band shares new single & live video shot on VHS, “Freak Out” ahead of their lengthy fall tour across North America and the UK. Trivecta feat. Rico & Miella – Open Road (Xavi Remix)
Xavi follows up his first official label release of the year with another banger of a remix for Trivecta’s debut album, “The Way Back Up.” Xavi is a name that most fans of Ophelia Records and Melodic Bass have come to know well over the past two years. Since being discovered by the label, he has released a full length album, a four track EP, and multiple official remixes for Seven Lions himself.
A rare feat for a well-versed hand that has helped shape an island’s electronic music scene and now DJs from a pedestal, Valeron’s 2022 album Aroma frames Greece’s diverse musical history through a contemporary lens and acts as a testament to the current collaborative milieu of the island — a dance between Mediterranean and Middle Eastern instruments, all acoustic and recorded live, with the Mykonos native‘s hovering hand on mixers and synths.
Vicetone- Always Running
Dutch producer duo Vicetone have returned to Monstercat today with another pop-driven record in their arsenal of hits. Following their summer scorcher, “Barcelona Nights,” they keep the fire burning with the new single, “Always Running.” Unlike their signature strings-forward sound, they’ve laid a catchy R&B-style topline over arp-like synths and a moody bassline. The track is a nod to their lifestyle both as busy musicians on the road and as fitness aficionados.
Will Joseph Cook- Gummy feat. Tessa Violet
Will Joseph Cook shares a collaboration with American viral pop sensation Tessa Violet on his single “Gummy,” taken from his third album Every Single Thing, released earlier this year via Bad Hotel / The Vertex. Zeds Dead- The Machines feat. BLANKE
They share their latest release “The Machines,” a highly-anticipated set ID and collaboration with Deadbeats mainstay, BLANKE. Zeds Dead recently played the track live with BLANKE at Red Rocks, and are looking to continue their hot 2022 with their heaviest banger of the year.
“The Machines” marks the 4th release from Zeds Dead this year, following up a collab with Blunts & Blondes (“Think of You”) as well as acclaimed singles “I Took A Ride” & “In My Head.” Previous singles have offered fans more in the direction of their new sub-label, Altered States, which navigates house, downtempo and dubstep adjacent genres (Read More at Billboard). On “The Machines,” fans find the duo returning to electro-driven dubstep.
