September 11th Weekly Roundup Feature
Hey hey, everyone! It’s September 11th and I don’t want to say my usual “Happy” because of the significance of the date in American history, but I will say that there are some great tracks on this week’s lineup! Check out our featured track most of all- it’s a banger! Keep it tuned to The Festival Voice!
Featured Track
PurpleSkye- Mint (Phillosopher Remix)
Comments come from Phillosopher!
- What made this production fun to work on?
- Vocal recording was exciting for this track because I have never created a vocal emphasised song (with my own voice). This project had been a new adventure for me, and scary at times.
- What do the lyrics mean?
- These lyrics are all about experiencing new life, trial, success, and failure. Mint in fresh, fresh is new, and new can be either scary, beautiful, or a little bit of both. The phrase young love is not necessarily about a person, but just a love for something new.
- What inspired this production?
- Honestly, I was just having fun playing with serum, designing some sounds, and then I started playing some chords (the lead) and the energy just felt so right.
- What is your favorite part of the production?
- My favorite part of the production is the counterpoint relationship between the Bass and Leads. There are some fun and intricate call and response moments that help keep the energy high.
- Was there a challenge with this track and if so, how did you approach it?
- Yes one main challenge in this track was finding and then performing the right vocal tones and energy. The approach was simple, keep trying different takes until I nailed the right compotation of energy and feel. Usually this is about 30 – 45 takes per phrase. In the end, this was about 500 takes total to choose from! Not uncommon by any means.

Bret Koontz & Truancy Club (ft. members of Fran, Famous Laughs) announce their new LP, A Sparkle Road Cult, out November 18 via Earth Libraries. The sound at the center of A Sparkle Road Cult is Bret’s voice. It’s an idiosyncratic writer and composer’s voice that has shades of the outsider sounds of Robert Wyatt, Syd Barrett, and Arthur Russell. The accompanying arrangements bring to mind the songcraft of the Carpenters and Prefab Sprout-esque Sophisti-Pop shaken up/down by a touch of the large format boogie of Wings and raw Power Pop of Big Star.

Jordi Up Late- GOAX
LA-based electropop artist & producer Jordi Up Late is back with a brand new single entitled “HOAX.”
Speaking on her latest track, she wrote:
“I’ve never thought of myself as a particularly sweet or bubbly person. I get moody and I get annoyed and I need space. So when I found myself in a relationship with a happy go lucky type, the personality imbalance created a creeping disillusionment. The tension festered over time into my feeling he was either fake or emotionally one dimensional. Either way the relationship became a ‘hoax’ and disintegration was inevitable.”

The Garden- Horseshit on Route 66
Southern California band The Garden have released their new album, Horseshit on Route 66. The 11-tracks that make up their latest are some of twin brothers Wyatt & Fletcher Shears most fiery endeavors to date. Recorded in Downtown Los Angeles, the record pulls from the legacies of Southern California hardcore and UK punk, but continues to experiment with dissonant electronics and the drum & bass sound the duo is known for. Though plans to record in a ghost town and set up camp “somewhere haunted” were abandoned, that spirit is embodied in the record. “A good chunk of the songs were inspired by the “scary stories” we read as kids and our interest in the supernatural,” says Wyatt. The duo also cite children’s book illustrator Stephen Gammell as a major reference point, his drawings infused with the same underlying menace that their music evokes.
